Alberta
The first people in Alberta were the Paleo-Indians who arrived in at least 10,000 years ago,
toward the end of the Ice Age. Alberta was named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta,
daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Alberta became a province of Canada in 1905.
It is the fourth largest province of Canada. Alberta is located to the west of Canada. It lies
between British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The Capital city of Alberta is Edmonton. The
current population of Alberta is 3,808,384.
MAJOR CITIES
Calgary
Some of the major cities of Alberta are Calgary and Lethbridge. Calgary
is important because of the Calgary Stampede. One million tourists come to see
the Calgary Stampede every year, including children. It is the only place in the
world where every child can become a cowgirl or a cowboy.
Lethbridge
Lethbridge is the fourth largest city by population in Alberta. It is located near
the Canadian Rockies. They have cool summers and mild winters. Lethbridge lies
Southeast of Calgary on the Oldman River. The old Canadian Pacific Rail Station
in Lethbridge is now a mall.
MAJOR LANDFORMS
The physical appearance of Alberta is mountains, glaciers, forests, lakes, rivers,
plains and foothills. The major mountain of Alberta is the Rocky Mountains.
Athabasca and Clearwater River Valley are important rivers in Alberta. Barrier
Lake, Agnes Lake, Bow Lake and Cold Lake are some of the major rivers of
Alberta.
NATURAL RESOURCES
Wheat is a crop found in Alberta. We use wheat in cereal and bread. Petroleum is
a resource and is used for a liquid made from oil and it is used as a fuel for
engines. We also use Pulp to make paper to write on.
TOURISM
West Edmonton Mall
This mall is the largest in North America and the fifth largest in the world! It has a water
park, and an amusement park called Galaxy Land, a skating rink, and a golf course. They
have a huge food court and a Chinatown. There is about 800 stores including build-a-bear
workshop and four movies theatres inside the mall.
Lake Louise
You should go to Lake Louise because it is in the Canadian Rockies. Lake Louise
was formed by a glacier that was a thousand years old. The view of the Canadian
Rockies is wonderful, while the sound of the flowing water drifts away.
Lethbridge Japanese Gardens
This garden is a beautiful place to go because there is a great site of flowers, nature
and plants. You can smell the different types of flowers such as the Wild Rose.
The Wild Rose grows on mountains and in the meadows.
INTERESTING FACTS
The Great Horned Owl
Alberta's provincial bird is the Great Horned Owl. It lives in the province all year round. They have light grey to dark brown feathery ear horns. It hunts only at night. They have large round gold eyes.
Wild Rose
Alberta's provincial flower is the beautiful Wild Rose. It is prickly and used in
perfumes because of it's rosy scent. The wild rose has been used for certain
ailments like bee stings and colds.
Lodge Pole Pine
Alberta's provincial tree is the Lodge Pole Pine.
It reminds me of a Christmas tree!
