NEW BRUNSWICK
MAJOR CITIES
The capital of New Brunswick is Fredericton. The important cities are:
Saint John, Moncton, Miramichi, Edmundston, and Bathurst.
Saint John is a major city because it has a deep sea port.
Moncton is a major city because it is at the geographic centre of the Maritimes (the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island).
Miramichi is a major city because it is in the centre of New Brunswick and is at the mouth of a major river.
Bathurst is a major city because it is the city of the northern part of New Brunswick.

NATURAL RESOURCES
New Brunswick has/grows a lot of potatoes and they use the potatoes for french fries.
New Brunswick also has a lot of trees and they use it for lumber and paper.
New Brunswick has the biggest potash mine (in the world!) which is used to fertilize crops all around the world.
New Brunswick makes potatoes\french fries so we can eat them to help stay healthy (and French Fries are healthy).
New Brunswick uses lumber so people can make furniture and houses.

The three places that I think you should go if you visit New Brunswick are:
-The Bay of Fundy because it has the highest tides in the world and you can see a lot of whales.
-Kouchibougak National Park because it has beautiful white sand beaches and lagoons that you can swim in.
-The Tantramar Marsh because it is the last place for birds when they migrate and there are old Acadien dykes and it is flat and beautiful.

THE BAY OF FUNDY
This is a picture of The Bay of Fundy. As you can see here there are people canoeing around some cool rock formations called the Flower Pot Rocks. The Bay of Fundy is a bay on the Atlantic coast of North America. The Bay of Fundy is in the middle of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The Bay of Fundy has the bigest tidal range in the world! The Bay of Fundy was chosen as one of the finalists in the contest for the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The largest population on the Bay of Fundy is the city of Saint John. But Moncton is catching up to Saint John. These are the New Brunswick towns that are on the coast of the Bay of Fundy: St. Andrews; Blacks Harbour; St. Martins and Sackville. We know the Bay of Fundy has the highest tides because each region has kept records of all of the tidal ranges. A lot of parks interpret the Bay of Fundy's coastal ecosystem. Mills in Saint John ship pulp down the coast of the Bay of Fundy in barrels to other places. There were a lot of Mi'k Maq people living around the Bay of Fundy. The first Europeans to settle in New Brunswick were French and they made a town on the Bay of Fundy It was a good place for them to settle because there were lots of fish and safe harbours. Now there are mostly French and English. My mom's family is from the French (North) part of New Brunswick and my dad is from the English (south) part. French New Brunswickers are called Acadians. That's all about the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick!
THE PURPLE VIOLET FLOWER
The purple violet flower is New Brunswicks provincial flower. The purple violet grows about 20 centimetres. They are tiny but beautiful. The flowers can be violet, dark blue and sometimes white. The purple violet always has 5 petals. The purple violet grows about 3/4 inches across. The inner part of the flower is usually white with slightly darker veins. Real violets existed for centuries when the ancient Greeks were living and before Christ was born. The Greeks used the flowers for herbal remedies, wine and to sweeten food. The ancient Greeks also thought the violet was a symbol of fertility and in love potions. They also used it to wear above their head to stop headaches and dizzy spells.
THE BLACK CAPPED CHICKADEE
This is New Brunswick's provincial bird. It is called a Black Capped Chickadee. The Black Capped Chickadee has white sides on their faces. Underneath it has white with rusty brown on the sides that kind of looks like the roasted marsh mallow colour. It's back is gray and their tails are slate-gray. The bird's bill\beek is short and dark. Male and female chickadee's look alike but the males are slightly larger and longer than female chickadee's. The Black Capped Chickadee is found on a lot of coasts. It is found in the Northern part of the United States, James Bay, the Southern edge of the Northwest Territories and the Yukon, and the Southern half of Alaska in the North. Its habitat is the woods. It also lives in parks and suburban area. That is what I learned about the Black Capped Chickadee!

ACADIENS
One thing that makes New Brunswick special is its population of French speaking Acadians. The Acadian community started with the first French agricultural settlement in Canada. French continues to be spoken in New Brunswick by Acadians today.
Acadians have a rich society and culture. Acadians are very musical. There is an old saying that Acadians are born with songs in their veins and music in their fingertips. There is a lot of Acadian music in New Brunswick. They also have lots of songs, stories and legends that are passed from generation to generation. The sea is a very important part of Acadian culture, as they are a people who have always lived by the sea. You can tell an Acadian household in New Brunswick because it has a star on the outside. The star represent the Acadian people. It is the 'Stella Maris': the Star of the Sea.
